In the spring of 2024 Azabu Property Investments celebrated its 10 year anniversary. Starting from its roots as a proprietary distressed real estate trader, in recent years API has broadened its business profile.
Trading distressed real estate remains our core activity and passion, for both proprietary capital as well as our founding investors who meanwhile have seen all their initial capital returned through distributions and continue to enjoy the fruits of our absolute return strategy.
Around the start of the decade, we also started trading second hand luxury cars, arbitraging the price difference between Japan and Europe working with trusted partner Classic Master in Oud Gastel, The Netherlands. After a start-up period where we paid some tuition to -literally- learn the trade, we have arrived at a steady shipping rate of around 3 cars per month and some of our gorgeous inventory can be found in these pages.
Last but not least, we realized that our 10 years+ of trading property -nearly 400 trades if we count both buy and sell- made us well positioned to broker property transactions for third party owner-investors seeking an exit from their Japanese assets. We found the market for JPY 200-700mln sized residential buildings held by non-Japanese investor-owners to be particularly underserved. This client group, too small to be served by the institutional broker community, but not (well-)covered by the retail agents, not least because of language barriers, proved to benefit from our expertise and our deal-count for exits executed is gradually increasing.
